Sun Burn And Skin Health During The Summer

It’s summer, which means one thing: more time outside in the sun. Whether it’s at the pool, on the porch, on a walk, or on the beach, our exposure to the sun’s harmful rays skyrockets during the summer. That’s why skin health and protection during the summer is so important. One natural way to support and protect your skin may be with astaxanthin.

Astaxanthin and Skin Health

Astaxanthin, a member of the carotenoid family, is not considered an essential nutrient: but because of its properties and antioxidant activity, it may provide crucial support for skin health. One natural way to get astaxanthin is through seafood: People who do not eat seafood actually have below the average intake of astaxanthin. Whether it is through diet, through supplements, or through a combination of the two, most research recommends taking 4 to 12 mg per day. Among other things, astaxanthin supports the healthy structure of cellular membranes, meaning it may support skin elasticity and protect against wrinkles.

When it comes to skin health, studies in the International Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research (JPSR) indicate that astaxanthin is more effective than vitamin E at protecting mitochondria and cells from lipid peroxidation, which occurs naturally in small amounts in the human body, and eventually causes harm to cells and damage to tissues.

The dangers of sun damage to the skin are well-documented. Excessive exposure of unprotected skin to the sun can lead not only to sunburn, but also to photo-induced oxidation, inflammation, immunosuppression, aging, and even skin cancer. But studies suggest that, administered topically or orally, astaxanthin may serve as an excellent protectant against sun damage.

This is because astaxanthin is a photo-protectant, meaning that it protects tissues against UV-light photo-oxidation. Because UV light has been long-documented to cause oxidative damage to both the eyes and the skin, astaxanthin’s photo-protectant properties may have important applications in both skin and eye protection. Still more research suggests that astaxanthin may protect the skin against ultraviolet (UV-A) radiation.

It’s not just sun protection, though: astaxanthin may also have applications for those suffering from chronic skin ailments such as atopic dermatitis, which is related to seasonal health challenges and the immune system. Initial studies with mice suggest that because of its antioxidant activities, orally-administered astaxanthin (AST) may result in a decrease in symptoms like itching, erythema, edema, excoriation/erosion, and scaling/dryness.
