Natural Skincare Replacements and Why They Work So Well

More and more people are choosing to replace their skincare products that contains harsh chemical ingredients with a more natural skincare alternative.

There are numerous reasons why someone might gravitate towards natural skin care replacements. One common reason that consumers choose to replace skin and beauty products with natural replacements comes from a desire to avoid parabens.

Parabens

The FDA defines parabens as “a family of related chemicals that are commonly used as preservatives in cosmetic products. Preservatives may be used in cosmetics to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria and mold, in order to protect both the products and consumers.”

Parabens are extremely common, in products ranging from makeup to hair and shaving products, to deodorants and moisturizers, to sun, skin and facial care products.

Consumer concerns about parabens comes largely from a 2004 study in the Journal of Applied Toxicology, which touted a link between breast cancer and parabens, as it found that intact parabens could be found and extracted from human breast tissue. While some scientists have since disputed the methods of this study, many consumers choose not to take the risk. The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics states that there are reports that parabens have been linked to reproductive, immunological, neurological and skin irritation problems; the FDA does not currently have information to show that parabens affect health one way or the other.

Even if they aren’t concerned about parabens, some people prefer that the products in their home – from their cleaning supplies to their choices in hair and beauty care – contain natural ingredients whenever possible.

And sometimes, the choice has to do with quality as some people find that natural skincare replacements just have better results.

So what are some natural skincare replacements? And why do they work so well?

Gotu Kola

Gotu kola is a medicinal herb that has been used in natural medicine practices for centuries. One of its many uses is to support the skin.

One of the ways that gotu kola has been observed to support the skin is in the area of wound-healing. One study found that applying gotu kola water extract topically (as ointment, cream, or gel) resulted in “increased cellular proliferation and collagen synthesis at the wound site,” and that wounds would heal at a faster rate.

Another potential use of gotu kola in skincare is to treat stretch marks that have developed during pregnancy. A study looked at the effect of skin that was treated with a combination of gotu kola extract, vitamin E, and collagen-elastin hydrolastes, and found that compared to placebo, women were less likely to develop stretch marks.

Alba Botanica

There are many single herbal ingredients, such as gotu kola, that may support healthy skin. But it can be more difficult to products like sunscreen, lotion, and shaving cream with natural ingredients. That’s where finding a skincare line or brand with trusted ingredients can help.

Alba Botanica makes personal care products that are 100% natural and organic, and its vegetarian ingredients are never tested on animals. Alba Botanica creates hair and skincare products out of plant-based nut oils, herbal extracts, and pure essential oils. That means you’ll never find any of these ingredients in an Alba Botanica product: parabens, sulfates, phthalates, mineral oil, petrolatum, oxybenzone, PABA, nano-particles, DEA, MEA, TEA, PEGs, artificial colors or other potentially harmful toxins.

Alba Botanica Sunscreens

Alba Botanica has a wide variety of sunscreens, including facial sunscreen, sunscreen for sensitive skin, sport sunscreen, soothing sunscreen, and sunscreen for kids. Alba Botanica’s sunscreen products include high quality natural ingredients like aloe vera, which, research demonstrates, has collagen healing properties, protective effects against radiation damage, and anti-inflammatory action.

Other natural ingredients in various Alba Botanica sunscreens include chamomile, green tea, ginseng, Vitamin E, and calendula.

Alba Botanica Lotions

Alba Botanica’s lotions range from unscented moisturizer to cream shave lotions. Their Very Emollient Cream Shave (Unscented) also uses natural ingredients like aloe vera, chamomile, jojoba, and Vitamin E to provide a smooth shaving experience. For all-around moisture, Alba Botanica’s Very Emollient Body Lotion uses ingredients like safflower seed oil and shea butter to create a rich, moisturizing lotion.

These are just a few of Alba Botanica’s natural skincare products. Do you have a favorite, natural way to support your skin? What Alba Botanica product is your favorite?
