The Family That Uses The Same Supplements Stays Together

As an adult, you might take nutritional supplements to support your health, but what about your kids? Vitamin D

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that infants, children, and adolescents consume 400 IU of Vitamin D a day (equivalent to a liter of Vitamin D-fortified milk). Children who get less than that will need to supplement with Vitamin D, as a Vitamin D deficiency can lead to growth failure and rickets. Infants who are breastfed are especially at high risk for Vitamin D deficiency, although Vitamin D is critical for both breastfed and formula-fed infants.

Iron

Children need about 8 to 10 mg of iron per day, which can come from meat, iron-fortified cereals or grains. However, children are not immune from iron-deficient anemia, which especially affects girls who have started their menstrual periods and babies 9 to 24 months old. Babies should be screened for iron deficiency at their first year wellness check. If you or your children are experiencing iron-deficient anemia, then an iron supplement may help.

DHA

DHA is “a fundamental nutrient for children’s growth and development.” It is primarily present in fish and seafood, but unless your children are eating 2-3 servings of fish each week, they may not be getting all of the DHA they require. DHA supports the healthy growth of the brain and the eyes. One study found that for infants 9 to 12 months, those supplemented with fish oil (which is a natural source of DHA) scored better on attention scores in a free playtest. From babies to adults, DHA is important for the whole family.

Calcium

Studies have found that many children and teens do not get the calcium they need. One survey found that among children ages 9 to 12, only 12% of girls and 17% of boys got their required calcium. Calcium is crucial across age groups, as it supports healthy bone growth.

Osteoporosis, or a weakening of the bones, is called a “pediatric disease with geriatric consequences.” So it’s important to get the required amount of calcium starting in childhood and continuing through adulthood. It’s not just bones, though. Calcium also supports your heart, muscles, and nervous system. Other studies also suggest that calcium (along with vitamin D) may help protect against cancer, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

Astaxanthin

Astaxanthin is a member of the carotenoid family, and it’s a colorful pigment with some big potential health benefits. Astaxanthin can be found primarily in seafood, such as crustaceans like shrimp, crabs, lobster, krill, and crawfish, or fish like salmon or trout.

Studies have found that consuming fish and seafood, along with supplementing with fish oil or krill oil, can provide the body with critical omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (known as EPA and DHA).
